Illinois CCL Course, the last state to pass a conceal carry permit process. Because of that fact, Illinois is going through a learning curve with some of the toughest requirements and restrictions.

As of May 2015 - You must be a resident of one of the following states to apply:

Illinois, Hawaii, New Mexico, South Carolina or Virginia.

Illinois is still in the process of reviewing additional states for inclusion in this list. In accordance with 430 ILCS 66/40 (b), out of state residents may be eligible for an Illinois Concealed Carry License if your state meets the definition of substantially similar as established by rule. See 20 Il. Admin. Code 1231.10.

Utah CCW Course, in my opinion has the best CCW laws in the US today. Not pertaining to CCW but after the gross mis-justice in New Orleans during/after Katrina, when the government was confiscate law-abiding citizens firearms. Utah passed its own law making that a crime in their state. If you haven't heard about New Orleans confiscating firearms, you are not alone. Here is link to a Youtube video New Orleans Gun Confiscation. The other benefit is the cost of renewal is only $15.00.

As of May 2015 the following states will recognize a non-resident Utah CCW permit. (30 states)

Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, Delaware, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, Wisconsin, Wyoming.

Residents can add 5 more states to that list making the total 35 states. And they are, Colorado, Florida, Michigan, New Hampshire and Pennsylvania.

Virginia, their permit is called concealed handgun permit (CHP) Florida and Utah does not specify handgun meaning their permit covers other things besides handguns.

As of May 2015 the following states will recognize a non-resident Virginia CHP permit. (28 states)

Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Mexico, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia, Wisconsin and Wyoming.

Residents can add 4 more state to that list making the total 32 states. And they are Florida, Michigan, Pennsylvania and South Carolina.

If you travel, any of these permits would be a good addition.
